Masks are intricate and stunning sculptural works of art. And like any work of art, how you frame them makes all the difference.
Framing a three-dimensional object like a mask requires more than a standard frame. It calls for a deep-set frame with enough depth to accommodate the mask’s contours, feathers and handles without them pressing against the glass and appearing squished. It is also important that the frame's aesthetic be elevated in detail and texture enough to work with the exquisite craft of the masks.
The frame
What we often do is build our own deep frame by combining several frames with similar profiles. This creates an extremely curated look while using mouldings that do not come in the exact depth to accommodate the masks. Select like colours or use moulding tones that are different but that work together. Subtle beaded details or metallics are always a win when creating a high-end custom look.
Glass
Floating art glass is a popular option for a clean, modern look. This technique suspends the glass slightly away from the artwork, creating an airy feeling and avoiding direct contact with delicate mask surfaces, such as feathers, gilding, or hand-painted details, while providing the right protection.
Mounting and positioning
Hidden supports and museum-quality adhesives are used to “float” the mask inside the frame, giving it a dramatic, gallery-style presentation while ensuring both stability and preservation. Details like ribbon and feather placement as well as other masks within the same frame are also important to consider for balance and overall look.
It's all in the details
Design elements like lining the inside frame with lighting or with a coloured velvet can highlight the rich textures and details of the mask.
Ultimately, framing a custom mask combines protection and presentation. With the right materials and creative vision, you can turn a beautiful mask into a stunning focal point.
