​Colour is one of those things that can add a moment of pause when selecting design elements. We want to go bold and beautiful with rich colours, but staying neutral feels safe. Adding colour in just the right way, though, can turn your piece from nice to wow!

Start with a neutral

The moulding is often the primary focus of a frame design, so deciding on a more neutral option here can make adding a touch of colour "easier". Earthy woods, classic metallics or the standard black or white moulding can create a solid go-to in your frame design. From there, bring in a touch of colour with a thin mat, background mat or secondary frame.

Choose with intent

Pulling colour from your artwork and using it as a guide when selecting your frame design choices makes the entire piece feel purposeful. The colour flow becomes seamless as it carries from the artwork to the framing, and so it is easy for your eye to understand.  ​
