I’ve always been a sucker for photography. I can’t say that I’m an expert or even a great picture taker, nor do I know the ‘whys and the hows’ behind this art, but I can say that the entire process captivates me from start to finish. What enthralls me the most is the result of the relationship formed between photographer, subject and environment.
What on earth am I talking about? Imagine a simple flower that gets photographed by four different people. Each photograph will come out completely unique. The photographers are using the same subject, the flower, but each photographer’s point of view, their perspective of what is beautiful or better yet, what they believe should be captured by their photograph based in-part on how they are feeling, will slightly differ. To go one step further, the lighting, the angle, height and so on, will all influence the photograph’s outcome ever so delicately. Those nuances create that unique relationship I mentioned earlier, the ‘wow’ factor of photography for me.
What’s even more special is that each of the photographs will have captured the ‘soul’ of the flower but once combined with that relationship, something new will be revealed with every picture taken.
I love this thrilling result because it exemplifies the layers of everything and everyone. Nothing and no one is one-dimensional. I’m reminded of this every time I look at the same landscape or monument or person that has been shot by different people. I feel like I’m peeping into a secret universe that would not otherwise be allowed had a photograph not be snapped. It’s so real and so raw.
Giving the kids a camera and scrolling through the pictures they take is always a fun thing for me to do. Their perspective and the relationship they form with each subject are incredible. Try it. I promise you will never look at things the same way!
The old saying is that a picture speaks a thousand words. Several pictures speak a million words. Freely take pictures even if they are of cliché shots because your picture will tell a story unique to you.
