Focal points act like the "start" of a room. ​

Your eye goes there first and then all other design elements build from that, which is why it's so important.

Using art or a mirror, an oversized piece will quickly become the star of the room and pull a viewer's eye in. 

Or if size is a challenge, a smaller custom work that compliments existing moulding can direct a room's focus as well.
