Frame design. What is it and why do we want it?

For some it's hard to justify custom frame design. For others it's a no brainer. So let's take a closer look so you can decide for yourself.

We consider frame design as a three-fold definition - function, aesthetic, service.

Function...

It is the workings behind what makes a piece look great and last, like the details in how an item hangs within a frame to tell the right story, what parts of the item are shown in the display, what purpose does it serve (Do you want to be able to remove your item? Or is it a permanent hang?), how will it adhere to a backing, what materials will be used to protect the item getting framed, will the weight support the structure and so on. These "behind the scenes" questions and tasks take our artisans hours of work and involve mad skill! If a wrong, inferior material is used to attach an item to a mat board, for example, someone's treasured item could be ruined.

The thing about custom frame design is that the proficiency of this craft is not something that can be learned in school, out of a book, or even as a part time job, it's years of working with different items and materials that provide the knowledge to produce outstanding results.

Aesthetic...

When it comes to aesthetics a box-store or online frame versus a custom build is obvious. It's similar to anything custom. A kitchen, closet, clothes, haircuts! If you want it to fit exactly to certain specifications, you have to go custom. No two items are the same. No two people are the same. No two stories are the same. So how can we expect a one-fits-all product to work?

There's something magical about custom frame design and how it visually transforms pieces and spaces. A cherished item, loaded with sentiment but perhaps slightly tattered from the years can look new again with frame design. A piece of paper that is more than paper to our clients can be elevated and instantly look as special as it feels. A collection can get organized.  A mismatched set of items can be brought together into a spectacular display. A pile of family photos can be turned into a story with a gallery wall and awkward spaces into purposeful, stunning moments.

Service...

Custom frame design is a luxury service. However, good custom frame design considers everyone's style and budget and knows how to combine it with a functional product that delivers a complete visual wow. From the start of a project our frame designers ask a series of questions to learn whether the item getting framed is a gift, for your home or business and then will curate the design process accordingly.

Our job is to help breathe new life and love into old treasures. Allow clients to relive their best moments over and over again and protect their achievements, triumphs and memories, while creating beautiful spaces!

The layers of emotion that come over our clients when they see their items all polished off, safe and in a new setting is something that drives us forward time and time again. We are professionals and clients seek out our services because we can curate your space to match your vision and have the know-how to get it done right!
