The start of school is slowly becoming a reality in our home. I know permission slips, artwork and notes to field trips will soon be overwhelming my countertop so to avoid the crazy pileup here are some clever ideas to help get your family organized and ready for a successful school year.
Designate a wall in your home where each child’s school awards and special projects can hang. To make the best use of space, create or buy a framed corkboard, one per child, to display their prized schoolwork. As new pieces come in, simply unpin the old work, stash in your child’s memory box and pinup the new. This is a great system to help control the what to keep versus what to toss dilemma that parents often face during school time.

Depending on the age of your child set up a little homework nook in your home. Whether you decide to add this to your child’s bedroom, playroom or kitchen having an area where homework is consistently done helps solidify the routine and ease any potential resistance. Framed pegboards are perfect for storing scissors, glue sticks, crayons, pencils and erasers, so you won’t be stuck at homework time trying to find a sharpener again!

Every household needs a command center, especially during those busy school months. Choose a high traffic area in your home so that every family member can easily refer to schedules and calendars and keep on track.
Make this space work for your family. Anything that’s going to help with your days, weeks and months should go up here. Framed dry ease boards keep things looking good while also allowing you the ease of wiping and writing as your family’s needs change. I love the idea of creating individual calendars for each family member so that at a quick glance you can see what everyone is supposed to be doing on any given day. Another great idea is to have a larger dry erase board set up for family notes, a running grocery list or a wish list for weekend plans. Menu boards or chore lists also make handy boards.
