“Her family grew up in a small Japanese town near the beach.” This is the story of Yumi’s quilt.
For generations, these handmade quilt pieces were a part of Yumi’s family. They were sewn by her grandmother’s sister who lived and loved the skills of quilt making. Filled with sentiment, the irreplaceable art was gifted to Yumi’s mother.
Last year Yumi’s mother passed away. Going through her personal items Yumi rediscovered the beautiful quilt works of her family and all that they represent.
Her family grew up in a small Japanese town near the beach and so the design was put together to reflect those memories. “Such as the simple lifestyle; the colour of [the] Sea of Japan; the quiet local sandy beach; Asian fan-styled layout… " -Yumi We folded the 3 larger quilt pieces into a fan arrangement and then floated the individual ones like tiles. The different layouts were recessed in two separate windows. We selected a moulding with a rustic finish by Larson-Juhl and added conservation glass to preserve her story for future generations.
“[I] adore the art pieces, blessings and all memories harmonized into the unique framing layout."
