Tips for the black and white gallery wall

Gallery walls are such a great addition to any sized space in any room.

And you can't go wrong with a classic black and white version of this design. Here are our tips to achieve this look.

The content

The start to any gallery wall is curating the content. We love hunting for vintage postcards or black and white photos of your favourite vacation spots from way back when. They add a sense of nostalgia and familiarity to your space without feeling too touristy for a home.

Family photos are another option. Adding smiling faces of your loved ones to your entrance way or dining room creates a comfortable and welcoming vibe. If you have colour photos simply print them out in black and white or sepia for the desired look.

​The design

Keep things simple and clean for a classic black and white gallery wall design. Select white or black moulding with straight lines for the frame and a white mat. If you have a cooler tone to your walls perhaps a crisp white mat would work best. To add some warmth incorporate an off-white backing instead.

Adding interest without distraction is another great addition to your classic black and white gallery wall. A double mat using the same tone for both the interior and exterior creates a subtle detail that we love!

The install

You can either hang every piece in a series of symmetrical rows or slightly stagger them for a different look and depending on how many pieces you have. 

Either way it's always a good idea to hang your art about 3 inches apart to achieve a uniform hang that has balance.
